An eighteen-year-old student murdered his MLM recruiter in Uttar Pradesh after the recruiter’s persistent phone calls became unbearable. The victim, Vipin, worked for Smart Value, a company selling nutritional supplements through a multi-level marketing structure that prioritizes recruitment over product sales.

Vipin had targeted twenty-year-old Amit as a potential recruit. Amit repeatedly refused Vipin's advances, but Vipin continued to call, often multiple times daily and from various numbers. This relentless pressure eventually prompted Amit to agree to a meeting.

Amit suggested they meet at a local tomb. On the appointed day, both students arrived by motorcycle. Amit asked Vipin’s friend, who had accompanied Vipin, to go ahead to the tomb, claiming he needed to retrieve some documents from home. The friend proceeded to the tomb alone and waited. Vipin never arrived.

The friend’s concern grew when Vipin’s phone became unreachable. Vipin’s father filed a missing person report later that afternoon.

Police investigation revealed that Amit had strangled Vipin to death during the time the friend had gone to retrieve documents. According to the police report, an argument, the specifics of which remain unclear, escalated and led to the fatal assault.

Amit confessed to the crime and directed authorities to Vipin’s body. However, law enforcement officials are looking beyond a straightforward homicide. They are examining Smart Value’s aggressive recruitment practices as a potential contributing factor. Police believe the company's high-pressure sales environment may have created a desperate situation for Vipin, compelling him to pursue Amit relentlessly.

Smart Value now faces an official inquiry into its operations. Authorities intend to investigate the company’s role in the incident and will scrutinize its business documents. The company has not issued any public statement regarding the death.

A review of Smart Value’s online materials revealed numerous claims that appear to violate marketing regulations. These types of claims are common in MLMs that often blur the line between legitimate supplement sales and illegal pyramid schemes.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the psychological toll and potential consequences of aggressive recruitment tactics. Two young lives were irrevocably altered by a business model that relies heavily on persistent, high-pressure sales tactics. Vipin died as a result of these pressures, while Amit faces murder charges.
