A traveler arriving at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport recently paid 100 euros for a taxi ride that should have cost around 55 euros. The victim, who described themselves as an experienced traveler, detailed a sophisticated four-person operation involving a fake taxi meter application. The incident began when uniformed individuals directed the traveler away from the official taxi line towards a rideshare area.
Two separate people, both displaying badges, pointed the passenger to the designated rideshare section. There, a third individual, acting as a dispatcher, assigned a Mercedes sedan. The passenger questioned the fare, knowing the fixed rate for airport transfers to central Paris. The dispatcher claimed a "strike" had suspended normal fixed fares, insisting the ride would go by meter.
Once inside the taxi, the driver began the journey. The passenger, still suspicious, checked an AI chatbot which confirmed no such strike or fare suspension was in effect. Realizing the deception, the passenger prepared for the inflated charge.
Upon arrival, the driver demanded 102 euros, displaying a phone screen with what appeared to be a fabricated meter application. The passenger contested the amount but paid 100 euros to avoid further confrontation. The traveler noted the scam's effectiveness lay in its multi-person coordination and the believable, but not exorbitant, final price.
