A New Jersey woman lost $36,000 to a sophisticated grand jury duty scam, making multiple Bitcoin ATM deposits after receiving threats of arrest for contempt of court. The scammers claimed to be from the Livingston Police Department in New Brunswick.

The victim received a phone call from individuals posing as government officials. They alleged she failed to appear for grand jury duty and faced a warrant for her arrest, along with contempt of court charges. The callers even claimed to possess a signed certified mail notice proving she was summoned.

These imposters told her she could verify her signature at the station to clear her name. But first, she had to pay federal and state fees for the missed appearance and the contempt charge. They imposed a strict "gag order," forbidding her from discussing the situation with anyone, including her husband.

When she went to her bank for the money, the scammers instructed her to tell the teller the funds were for "home improvement." They demanded she keep her phone on all night for monitoring, citing the gag order. This constant contact and isolation instilled significant fear, preventing her from confiding in her family.

The scammers sent fake warrants and gag order letters via text message, reinforcing their control. They convinced her the government would refund her money once she paid the fees and cleared her name. She visited the bank multiple times, making three separate Bitcoin ATM deposits after receiving QR codes for the scammers' digital wallet.

She was preparing to deposit an additional $28,000 when the phone connection unexpectedly dropped. This interruption prompted a moment of doubt. She then contacted the actual Livingston Police Department, who confirmed she had fallen victim to a scam. The realization hit her hard.

The victim discovered her children's savings had also been withdrawn. Overcome with distress, she considered taking out a $40,000 loan, leaving her home, and disappearing. The family is now working through the emotional and financial fallout, focusing on rebuilding their dignity.
