Speak Asia Online claimed on September 12, 2012, that the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Mumbai controlled its website and server. The company stated the ongoing investigation prevented it from launching new information or allowing members to access their accounts. This assertion followed weeks of website dysfunction.
Since August, Speak Asia steadfastly maintained that the EOW seized its server, which stopped the company from sending out surveys and blocked member logins. Then, approximately 48 hours before the September 12 statement, members found they could suddenly log into the Speak Asia website and access their accounts again. Neither Speak Asia nor the EOW offered an official explanation for this change at the time.
Public records showed the "speakasiaonline.com" domain was hosted in the United States with GoDaddy. The website itself operated from Singapore, hosted by the company Usonyx. The question of how the EOW held jurisdiction in either of these foreign countries remained unanswered.
The EOW recently responded to Speak Asia members who inquired about the website changes. It reaffirmed that "Speak Asia's site is registered outside India and its server is located in Singapore." However, the EOW then declared that the "Server is in Singapore and never officially controlled by EOW. So no question of handing back (the server)."
This EOW statement directly contradicts Speak Asia's long-standing claims. For the EOW to seize a server in Singapore, it would require a court order presented to Usonyx. If the EOW had actually taken the server, the entire Speak Asia website would have ceased to exist overnight. This raises questions about who disabled the login functionality for panelists back in August and stopped the surveys.
As of this evening, Speak Asia continues to assert EOW control over its server. Ashok Bahirwani, Secretary of the All India Speak Asia Panelist Association (AISPA), categorically stated the website remained under EOW control.
