Ruja Ignatova is a suspect in an active German criminal investigation into OneCoin, despite claims from the company's remaining boosters that prosecutors have cleared the cryptocurrency scheme.
For months, OneCoin affiliates have spread false claims online that German authorities dropped the case. Igor Krnic, who runs the "OneCoin Debate" forum, has been particularly aggressive in pushing this narrative to investors still clinging to the scheme.
When Bulgaria's Capital contacted German prosecutors directly, they got a different story.
Bielefeld General Prosecutor Gerald Rübsam confirmed the investigation is ongoing with no end date in sight. "We are investigating a suspected organized commercial fraud group, money laundering, pyramid sales providing financial services without authorization and providing payment services without permission," Rübsam said.
Eight suspects face investigation, mostly employees of OneCoin companies registered in Germany. Ignatova is among them. "We have no information on where Ruja Ignatova is currently at the moment," Rübsam added, noting that she remains presumed innocent until convicted.
The German investigation became public in May 2017. Around the same time, Ignatova vanished from public view and abandoned OneCoin investors. She hasn't surfaced since.
Desperate OneCoin true believers have invented countless explanations for her disappearance. She's on maternity leave, they claim. Then extended maternity leave. Then extended extended maternity leave. Some say she simply prefers privacy. Others have spun increasingly wild tales: she was kidnapped by the mafia, is being held captive, or was quietly killed.
The simplest explanation is also the most obvious. Ignatova fled as authorities closed in.
An international effort to investigate OneCoin's operators is underway. Facing mounting legal pressure, Ignatova likely disappeared to a country she believed would shield her from prosecution. Until evidence suggests otherwise, that remains the most probable scenario.
What's clear is that the OneCoin saga is far from over.
