Plexus just paid $600,000 to settle mail fraud charges, caught red-handed cheating the postal system for over three years.

The company systematically underpaid postage on thousands of mailings sent to the United States Postal Service, according to a civil case filed by the Department of Justice. Plexus calculated postage based on incorrect item attributes, deliberately shortchanging what it owed. In some cases, the company went further—it reused postage stamps on multiple packages, essentially paying once to mail twice.

The scheme ran from June 2013 through October 2016, a span of more than three years. During that time, post offices nationwide flagged approximately 125 instances of shortpaid or duplicate postage from Plexus shipments.

Federal postal inspectors caught on early. In June 2013, the United States Postal Inspection Service sent Plexus a certified letter warning about the shortpaid and duplicate postage. Plexus ignored it. The USPIS sent another warning in March 2014. Then another in July 2016. Still, the fraud continued unabated.

When confronted with the evidence, Plexus blamed "errors caused by third-party information systems." That excuse didn't fly. The company ultimately admitted responsibility, acknowledging it had deliberately underpaid postage and submitted duplicate postage that left USPS short on money owed.

Of the $600,000 settlement, $232,776 goes directly back to the postal service as restitution. The remainder covers penalties.

What's notable about the settlement is what it doesn't preclude. While the company says it doesn't expect criminal charges, the settlement agreement contains language that waives Plexus' right to defend itself against any future criminal prosecution or administrative action related to this conduct. That door remains open.

The DOJ hasn't indicated whether criminal charges are coming. If they do, Plexus has already signed away its ability to fight back in court.
