Romanian authorities raided the offices of CryptoData this week, seizing documents, phones, and computers from the crypto development firm. The target: Ovidiu Toma, a serial fraudster with a track record of running MLM crypto Ponzi schemes.
The raid, conducted by DNA—Romania's anti-corruption agency—came on February 5th as reported by Gandul. Toma wasn't in the country when authorities arrived. He was in Dubai, sponsoring the Untold music festival and living in what has become known as the MLM crime capital of the world.
What investigators found was a deliberate fabrication operation. The CryptoData team used artificial intelligence to create fake news articles about its devices being used in Ukraine's war effort. They went further: they altered Reuters articles and stole the identities of two Reuters journalists to give their claims credibility.
Toma's co-founder, Bogdan Mărunțiș, appears to have fled the country. He's now believed to be in Laos with his social media accounts locked down. Before disappearing, Mărunțiș sent a fake contract to a Ukrainian company for the purchase of Vladimir Putin figurines—a document he later admitted was fabricated.
The Putin figurines weren't hypothetical. According to țiripesurse.ro, CryptoData actually imported 250,000 of them worth $375,000 to its Voluntari headquarters in early 2024. Investigators found numerous CryptoData products on Russian websites, suggesting active commercial partnerships with Russian companies.
The operation connects to powerful people. Mărunțiș's mother, Elisabeta Mărunțiș, serves as accountant for Toma's companies—essentially the person covering up the illegalities. Her godfather is Florian Coldea, a former deputy chief of Romania's Intelligence Service and retired general who faces his own corruption charges involving influence peddling and money laundering.
The damage extends to investors. CryptoData launched Edain, a virtual currency, in March 2022 at 4.5 lei per coin. By last year, it had crashed to less than 0.007 lei—a loss of over 640 times its initial value. Passionate investors in the currency lost everything.
Romanian prosecutors have not yet specified what charges they plan to bring. The case remains active as investigators work through the seized materials and piece together the scope of the scheme.
