A top OneCoin promoter who spent decades defrauding investors across Europe died in Malaysia on November 24th from a streptococcus infection. Kari Wahlroos was 55.
Doctors amputated his leg in an attempt to save him, but it wasn't enough. In early November, before his death, sources told me Wahlroos was also battling diabetes, heart problems, and an undisclosed stomach condition.
Wahlroos made his first fortune in the Wellstar pyramid scheme before jumping to OneCoin in 2015. He quickly became the company's "Ambassador for Europe" and one of its most visible promoters, known for an relentlessly energetic stage presence. Behind closed doors, he lived what he himself called a "James Bond lifestyle"—heavy drug and alcohol abuse that defined his time at the company.
OneCoin, which would eventually bilk victims of more than $4 billion, eventually cut ties with Wahlroos. Two months after OneCoin founder Ruja Ignatova disappeared in 2017, he was out.
What followed was a decade of desperation. Wahlroos chased his "mighty eagle" days by jumping into one failed MLM crypto scheme after another. He joined DagCoin in 2018, surfaced at Geton Global's Ponzi prelaunch in August 2020, and promoted Lucky Dozens—an illegal lottery scheme run by Jan Eric-Nyman—in June 2021. He launched Freedom Republic, a short-lived social network, in December 2021, then Global NFT Group in late 2022. That last one was his final scam. His last promotional post for Global NFT Group came in September 2024.
Throughout it all, Wahlroos never showed an ounce of remorse. In a January 2024 documentary trailer, he told OneCoin victims to "kiss his ass." The full documentary, titled "Kari Wahlroos – OneCoin – The Inside Man," remains unreleased, and it's unclear whether director Orlando John has abandoned the project entirely.
Exactly how much money Wahlroos stole remains unknown. What is known is that he built himself a property empire in Dubai. Though never officially confirmed, Wahlroos is assumed to have left whatever remained of his ill-gotten wealth to Betija Valrosa, his long-time partner.
European law enforcement never managed to charge him. Originally from Finland, Wahlroos eventually moved to Malaysia, where he spent his final years before his death.
