Irina Dilkinska, the woman tasked with keeping OneCoin legal, instead spent years laundering its money. Now she's going to prison for four years.
Dilkinska held the title of Head of Legal and Compliance at the cryptocurrency fraud outfit. Her actual job was running its money laundering operation, working hand-in-glove with OneCoin co-founder Ruja Ignatova. Bulgarian authorities arrested her in 2021. She was extradited to the US in March 2023.
When faced with the federal charges against her, Dilkinska folded. In November 2023, she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. She also agreed to forfeit $111 million.
"Rather than upholding the law and embracing her position as the Head of Legal and Compliance, she facilitated and committed money laundering, aiding in the exploitation of millions of victims," Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement. "As Dilkinska learned today, this Office will hold accountable every perpetrator of the OneCoin scheme, no matter where they may hide."
The sentence makes Dilkinska the fifth OneCoin insider to land in prison. Karl Sebastian Greenwood, OneCoin's co-founder, drew twenty years in September 2023. Gilbert Armenta, who was both Ruja Ignatova's lover and a key figure in the US money laundering network, received five years in February 2023. Mark Scott, who ran OneCoin's American money laundering operation, got ten years in January 2024. Frank Ricketts, part of the European laundering network, was sentenced to five years by a German court that same month.
Ruja Ignatova, the scheme's mastermind, remains a ghost. Authorities believe she's either dead or hiding somewhere in Dubai or Russia. The woman who built one of the largest pyramid schemes in history has managed to stay ahead of law enforcement for years. Her absence from the courtroom stands in stark contrast to the parade of her associates heading to federal prison—a reminder that while the US can eventually corner the foot soldiers, the architects of massive fraud sometimes slip away entirely.
