A massive class-action lawsuit against OneCoin—the cryptocurrency scheme that defrauded thousands—is stalled because lawyers can't find the people running it.

The case won't move forward until the court officially notifies all the defendants. So far, nobody's been able to locate OneCoin LTD, Ruja Ignatova, or Sebastian Greenwood to serve them with legal papers.

On August 23rd, a judge ordered lead plaintiff Donald Berdeaux to tell the court what he'd done to track them down. The answer: nothing yet.

Ignatova and OneCoin LTD are based in Bulgaria and appear to be deliberately avoiding service. Greenwood, holed up in Sweden, is doing the same. The thing is, Greenwood isn't even in Sweden anymore. He was arrested in Thailand and extradited to the United States in late 2018. It's unclear if Berdeaux's legal team knows this. As for Ignatova, she vanished in Greece in 2017 and hasn't been seen since.

Because the defendants can't be physically served, Berdeaux's team plans to ask permission soon to serve them by email instead. In the meantime, the entire lawsuit is frozen.

Judge Caproni told Berdeaux to file a status letter on the first business day of each month detailing his efforts. Those reports start September 3rd.

By that date, the situation had gotten worse. Six defendants remained unserved instead of three. Irina Andreeva Dilinska, David Pike, and Nicole J. Huesmann had also dodged service.

The European defendants—OneCoin, Ignatova, Greenwood, and Dilinska—live beyond U.S. jurisdiction, so Berdeaux's lawyers plan to file a motion requesting permission for electronic service before October 1st.

Pike and Huesmann are different. Both believed to live in Florida, they were recently named in the lawsuit. Berdeaux hired a process server to chase them down this week.

The OneCoin scheme promised investors easy riches through a fake cryptocurrency. The company's operators collected hundreds of millions in deposits before regulators shut it down. Thousands of victims lost their life savings.

Now those victims wait as their lawyers chase ghosts across continents.

🤖 Quick Answer

What is the current status of the OneCoin class-action lawsuit?
The class-action suit against OneCoin, a cryptocurrency fraud scheme, remains stayed due to service of process issues. The court cannot proceed until defendants—including OneCoin LTD, Ruja Ignatova, and Sebastian Greenwood—are officially notified. Plaintiff Donald Berdeaux has yet to locate them successfully.

Why has the OneCoin case stalled in court proceedings?
The litigation cannot advance without proper legal service to all defendants. Ignatova and OneCoin LTD, based in Bulgaria, appear deliberately unavailable. Greenwood, initially believed in Sweden, was arrested in Thailand and extradited to the United States in late 2018, complicating notification efforts.
