New Zealand police have seized a Wellington house and $462,000 in cash they believe belongs to one of the world's most wanted financial fugitives.
The assets are tied to Frank Schneider, a Luxembourg national who served as the right-hand man to OneCoin founder Ruja Ignatova. Between 2018 and 2020, authorities say Schneider funneled money to an associate in New Zealand who purchased the property and accumulated the cash on his behalf.
Police are now asking the High Court to permanently forfeit the assets. They worked alongside international law enforcement partners to locate and seize what they suspect are proceeds from OneCoin, the cryptocurrency pyramid scheme that defrauded millions globally.
Schneider's role in the OneCoin operation was far from minor. The former head of Luxembourg's intelligence agency didn't just help run the scheme—he allegedly oversaw its entire global money laundering apparatus. More critically, he used his intelligence contacts to tip off Ignatova when US investigators began closing in on the operation. Ignatova disappeared in late 2017, just as federal authorities were tightening their grip.
Despite the asset seizure, authorities have not confirmed whether Schneider himself is in custody. Detective Inspector Christiaan Barnard stated there was "no suggestion any of the suspects from the OneCoin scheme are in New Zealand," which suggests Schneider remains at large.
This wouldn't be the first time he's evaded capture. French authorities arrested him in 2021, but the operation fell apart when the French failed to properly execute the extradition that US authorities had secured. Schneider walked free and has been a fugitive ever since.
Today's seizure marks a significant blow to his financial network, but Schneider's whereabouts remain unknown. Like his former boss Ignatova, he continues to evade international law enforcement, leaving investigators with frozen assets but an empty chair at the defendant's table.
