The National Consumer Commission will keep its investigation findings on suspected pyramid schemes under wraps.
The NCC investigated nine companies it believed were operating illegal pyramid schemes. WorldVentures, Kipi (also known as Mydeposits241), Make Believe, NMT Investments, Instant Wealth Club, MMM South Africa, Sikhese (Pty) Ltd, DiPESA, and Wealth Creation Club all faced scrutiny. Only one of them passed the test.
DiPESA cleared the investigation. NCC spokesperson Trevor Hattingh confirmed the company showed no characteristics of operating a pyramid scheme under the Consumer Protection Act. "On completion of our assessment into the business practices and operating model of DiPESA, the NCC found that the company did not require any further assessment or scrutiny," he said.
The other eight companies did not receive the same verdict. The NCC has handed its findings to the South African Police Service's Commercial Crimes unit instead of releasing them publicly. Hattingh explained the decision: "We have been working with the Commercial Crimes unit of Saps on this matter from the onset, and have now handed over all information and assessments to them to deal with the matter further."
Police secrecy rules the day now. The NCC will not comment publicly on the remaining investigations to protect the integrity of police work. That means WorldVentures and MMM South Africa will not see any public statement confirming what the agency found. What is clear: neither company received the clean bill of health that DiPESA did.
No timeline exists for how long police investigations will take. Victims and the public waiting for answers face an indefinite wait.
