Hanli Lombard's MulaUp scheme keeps collapsing—and she keeps relaunching it.

The cycler Ponzi collapsed for the fourth time, but Lombard isn't giving up. A fifth reboot called MulaUp Mobile is already in the works, according to a newsletter sent to investors. BehindMLM reviewed the fourth version back in August 2022 when it was running from mulaup.com. That site's hosting got suspended.

By mid-November, the scheme had ground to a halt. "As of 3-months ago, MulaUP has practically come to a standstill," Lombard wrote to investors. She claimed the team had been "quiet and in the dark and well hidden behind the scenes" while figuring out what to do next.

What they came up with was an expansion plan. MulaUp Mobile aims to go global—a significant shift from targeting primarily South Africans with previous versions. "MulaUP is going live worldwide!!" the marketing materials promised. But the compensation plan tells a different story. All earnings are still listed in South African rand.

The "earning opportunities" are thin. Members can make money through four products: Mula-4-Chat pays 10 cents per message, Mula-4-Dial pays 10 cents per minute of calls, Mula-4-Money pays 1 rand per transaction over 100 rand, and Mula-4-Share pays 5 rand per click. The maximum monthly earnings cap is 1,600 rand.

Lombard had plans to launch MulaUp Mobile at the MAP Games, a soccer tournament that draws 1.8 million people annually. She announced that MulaUp would become the official sponsor. "We will have scouts at the Games telling people about MulaUP," she wrote, outlining what amounted to a mass recruitment operation at a family event.

That never happened. When it became clear the MAP Games wasn't interested in hosting a Ponzi recruitment drive, Lombard pivoted to damage control. On November 8th, she blamed "a great delay and technical issues" with an investor's funds. The launch was delayed but "isn't going to go away," she promised.

Days later, on November 10th, Lombard's marketing shifted targets—this time toward children. She pushed a "Kids Special" offering entry for a one-time payment of 200 rand for anyone under 18. The offer was expiring at midnight.

How much money victims have lost to MulaUp remains unknown. What's clear is that Lombard has mastered the art of the reboot. Each time the scheme collapses under its own weight, she simply rebrands and starts recruiting again.
