Marlon and LaShonda Moore ran a $29 million pyramid scheme that fleeced thousands of people out of more than $10 million. Now federal prosecutors want to put them in prison for decades.
A Texas grand jury indicted the Moores on charges of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and money laundering. The couple owned and operated BINT—short for Blessings In No Time—a gifting scam that launched in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each wire fraud count carries a maximum 20-year sentence. Each money laundering count could mean 10 years behind bars.
The twelve-page indictment accuses them of one conspiracy count, five wire fraud counts, and three money laundering counts. If convicted on all charges, they face up to 130 years in prison combined.
The DOJ, US Postal Inspection Service, Secret Service, and IRS Criminal Investigation division coordinated the investigation.
This criminal case follows a $9.7 million civil settlement with the Federal Trade Commission in July 2023. The Moores paid $2.5 million in restitution to victims as part of that deal. A $7.2 million civil fine was suspended based on their reported financial status.
Prosecutors plan to seize at least $2 million in criminal forfeiture. They're also targeting any property connected to the scheme. Court documents show the Moores sent $446,000 in victim money to a mortgage lender for a Texas property—money prosecutors want back.
The case has moved slowly. Only two sealed DOJ subpoenas appear in the court docket besides the November indictment. But in late August, the court set a plea deadline of January 13, 2025, after both sides requested a continuance. If no deal materialized, trial was scheduled for February 3, 2025.
LaShonda Moore's attorney tried to delay again in December, citing medical issues and requesting to push the trial to May or June 2025. The judge rejected the request outright, writing in a January 3rd order that there would be "no continuance of the trial currently set for 2/3/2025."
The Moores appear to be heading toward a guilty plea. As of early February 2025, both Marlon and LaShonda Moore pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering each.
