A cryptocurrency fraudster pleaded guilty to running a scheme that bilked investors out of millions through fake digital coins.
Mardy Eger, also known as Marquis Demarking Egerton, admitted in federal court to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering with concealment. Prosecutors brought charges against him in early 2022 as part of a sweeping crackdown on the operators behind EmpowerCoin, ECoinPlus, and JetCoin—three schemes that promised riches but delivered nothing but empty wallets.
Eger signaled his intention to plead guilty in May 2023. Three months later, on July 13th, he walked into court and entered his guilty plea. The judge ordered the US Probation Department to complete a presentence investigation report by January 15th, 2024. According to court records, there's no evidence that report was ever filed. Eger remains free on bail while waiting to be sentenced.
The guilty plea doesn't end Eger's legal troubles. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission sued him separately on related fraud charges in March 2022. That civil case has been shelved until the criminal case wraps up.
Two of Eger's co-conspirators have also folded. William White and Greg Aggesen both pleaded guilty to their roles in the scheme. But Dwayne Golden, the remaining defendant, is fighting the charges. He's headed to trial.
A court filing on April 16th set the stage for Golden's trial date to be scheduled on April 23rd. When that hearing happened, the judge set Golden's trial for April 14th, 2025. Until then, Golden maintains his innocence while the case moves through the system.
