Calen Powell, known online as "Crypto Clover," faced detention and interrogation by FBI agents upon his return to Seattle, Washington. Powell had promoted the collapsed BitConnect cryptocurrency scheme through his YouTube channel. The exact amount Powell profited from BitConnect remains undisclosed.

Powell, who describes himself as a "crypto nomad," sold many of his U.S. assets earlier this year. He travels extensively in Southeast Asia but visits Seattle periodically. His most recent trip brought him to the attention of federal authorities. This encounter suggests a federal watchlist targeting key BitConnect promoters.

Powell disputes the characterization of BitConnect as a Ponzi scheme operating through securities fraud. He stated that the threats he faced were baseless and without legal foundation. The Securities Act, enacted in 1933, governs securities law in the United States.

Upon disembarking his flight, Powell was detained by border immigration control. He was subjected to a search where his electronic devices were seized and scanned. Powell reported that the agents made threats against him. He later identified one of his interrogators as an undercover FBI agent.

Three FBI agents subsequently entered the room and informed Powell they wished to discuss BitConnect. They questioned him extensively and threatened him with detention. Powell attempted to explain aspects of cryptocurrency to them.

Like Trevon James, who faced action from the South Carolina Securities Division, Powell appears to believe regulators misunderstand cryptocurrency. Powell stated the FBI would need to "hack entire networks" to seize his digital assets. This is incorrect. The FBI can obtain a court order compelling Powell to surrender his cryptocurrency. Failure to comply could result in contempt charges, fines, detention, or imprisonment.

During his questioning, Powell learned the FBI is investigating other BitConnect figures. He mentioned the authorities were looking into "CryptoNick," identified as seventeen-year-old Nicholas Trovato. Trovato was a significant BitConnect promoter on YouTube, believed to have defrauded investors of millions. Trovato has been in hiding since BitConnect's collapse.
